According to the Forest department, Marappa (55) from Denkanikottai along with a team of Forest department staff were involved in chasing a herd of elephants into the forest cover.
“A herd of around seven elephants had strayed out of the Thavarakarai forest area in the district. The team had successfully driven them into the forests when one of the elephants returned and charged at the unassuming forest guard around 7 pm,” said a Forest department staff.
Other members of the team immediately chased away the attacking elephant and rushed Marappa to Denkanikottai government hospital. However, he was declared dead at the hospital.
This elephant herd was camping in Krishnagiri district for over the last two months and the Forest department staff were on their toes to ensure that the animals do not stray into the residential neighbourhood.
The death of Marappa has left the other staff in the Forest department shocked.
