Addressing the gathering at a Christmas celebration organised here, Stalin said the DMK was always with the minority people and has initiated a series of welfare schemes for themarginalised section.

Stalin said Karunanidhi had always stood in support of the poor, Dalits and minority people, adding that the party would continue to support them.

“Helping the minorities doesn’t mean that the DMK is against the majority. It is our duty to extend a helping hand to the under- privileged. But the BJP is confusing the people by diluting our good gesture,” Stalin said.

Lashing out at Modi, Stalin said he is the Prime Minister for the rich people. “When Tamil Nadu was suffering due to cyclone Gaja, the PM did not issue even a single message consoling the people. Instead, he attended functions including weddings of rich people. He did not provide the compensation sought by the State Government. Hence, I called him a sadist,” the DMK leader said.

He appealed to the people of India to avoid the BJP citing the example of TN all these years.

‘Provide proper compensation to Gaja victims’

A group of DMK cadre staged a protest in Nagapattinam on Saturday demanding the State Government to speed up the distribution of compensation to those affected by cyclone Gaja. They assembled at Puthur junction and blocked traffic plying on the road. Raising slogans against the State and Central Governments for not providing proper compensation to the cyclone victims, they claimed that the officials were not properly assessing the damage sustained, leading to those affected being left out in the list of compensation beneficiaries. “Further, the government officials have not properly assessed the damage to fishing boats. The fishermen who have lost their livelihood are struggling to meet their ends. Similarly, there is a discrepancy in the enumeration of damaged trees. There is a need for a proper assessment,” a DMK functionary said.  On receiving information, the Nagapattinam police rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesters. However, they refused to disperse following which they were arrested.
