‘RGGGH model to treat poison cases producing results’
“Integrating poison training with State’s Trauma, Accident and Emergency Initiatives (TAEI), has already reduced the number of deaths due to poisoning to less than one per cent,” said Dr J Bruno, a surgeon, who is also in charge of the TAEI programme.

While poisoning is one of the six pillars considered under the TAEI, the government has been taking steps to develop treatment facilities across the State based on Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital’s (RGGGH’s) model.
He said, we follow a specific protocol while handling poison cases adding, “From finding out what kind of poisoning the patient is suffering from to ensuring there are enough trained practitioners in each government institute, we have been taking steps to improve the existing structure.”
In RGGGH, doctors, nurses and other staff are trained under their Toxicology Department’s training programme. “The doctors are trained on the kinds of poisoning and the best way of handling each case. They are also trained on the importance of referral for specific cases,” said Dr Ragunanthanan, Head of the Department at RGGGH.
While the training and other programmes are being carried out under the Tamil Nadu Health System’s Project, he said that while studying the data, it was brought to notice that the burden of deaths has come down to less than one per cent. “Not only are we working towards improving the facilities in each government hospital and Primary Health Centre, but the presence of TAEI has helped the State a lot in this aspect,” the doctor added.
