    70-yr-old killed as bus during overtake bid collides with cab

    A 70-year-old woman was killed and her grand-daughter critically injured after an MTC bus collided head-on with the cab, in which they were travelling, on Kamarajar Salai near Marina Beach on Friday morning. The driver of the car was also injured in the mishap.

    This second accident reported on the stretch in last two days, said the police. The police identified the deceased as Hemavathy. She was travelling in a cab with her grand-daughter Anandavalli from their house in Madhavaram to a dental clinic in Mylapore. The car was driven was identified as Venkatesan.


    The MTC bus (route 109) was heading towards Broadway from Kovalam. When the car travelling towards the Lighthouse was moving on Kamarajar Salai, the bus coming the opposite direction collided with the vehicle, near the Kannagi statue. The police said that the bus driver tried to overtake a vehicle and ended up hitting with the cab. The three injured persons were taken to government hospital. However, Hemavathy was declared dead on arrival.


    Anandavalli’s father, who booked the cab for the duo was worried as his daughter failed to answer calls even though the cab booking app showed that the trip was complete. Later, he received information about the incident, police noted. The mishap which happened around 10.30 am caused a heavy traffic jam on the stretch for nearly 30 minutes. Because of traffic snarl, the ambulance couldn’t reach the spot as fast as expected.
