A senior official from the School Education Department told DT Next on Thursday that the enrolment of students in government schools has drastically reduced by more than 17 per cent when compared with the academic year of 2014-15 to this year.

In 2014-15 the enrolment of students in government schools was 56,55,628 and in 2018-19, the figure was 46,60,965 – recording a decrease of 9.9 lakh

According to the official, number of students enrolled were comparatively less in about 3,100 government schools in the State. Similarly, 812 schools especially at primary and middle level are functioning with less than 15 students.  At present, there are about 59,000 government schools functioning in Tamil Nadu.

Stating that since the government is keen not to close any of its schools due to poor admission, the official said authorities are planning to distribute the students evenly by shifting them from other schools that recorded good admissions.

However, the official also admitted that some schools might be closed if this plan of shifting the students did not work out.

The official said that at primary level, the percentage of enrolment of boys and girls is 51.56 and 48.44 respectively, and at upper primary level, the percentage of enrolment of boys and girls is 51.35 and 48.65 respectively this year.

He also disclosed that the search committee reported that the teachers’ recruitment has increased to about 8 per cent, and that the availability of teachers was also less in many schools situated in rural areas.

“It was also found that many primary schools have only two teachers, with one teacher looking after administration activities”, the official added.
