Quality education and healthcare needed for people: Governor

Delivering the graduation day address at Jamal Mohammed College in Tiruchy, the Governor said India needs to ensure quality education and health care to its population while competing with the standards of the developed countries. At the same time doing away with corruption is of utmost importance to achieve that, he added.

The Governor made references from the religious text to elaborate on virtues like honesty and simplicity required of a student, while stressing on the importance of education.

Referring the holy Quran, Purohit said seeking knowledge is a sacred duty. “First word revealed to Prophet Mohammed was ‘iqra’, which means ‘to read’. The importance of education has been emphasised repeatedly in the Quran which recognises knowledge as means to get closer to God,” he said.

Purohit said the same emphasis on knowledge and education was laid by Sri Ramakrishna Pramahamsa, the Guru of Swami Vivekananda, who used to lay emphasis on learning.

The Governor also pointed out the simplicity and honesty of the late President APJ Abdul Kalam and religious leader Caliph Umar.

As many as 282 graduates from government-aided and self-financed PG courses for men were given their graduation certificates. Among them, 16 were university rank holders. The district collector K Rajamani, Secretary and Correspondent AK Khaja Nazeemudeen and others were present.

Meanwhile, Purohit released the special postal cover for commemorating the Maha Kumbabishekam festival of the Jambukeswarar temple at the Kanchi Mutt in Tiruvanaikovil.

The senior pontiff of Kanchi Mutt Vijayendra Saraswathi and other senior priests performed the holy consecration rituals and poured holy water on the gopurams. Anticipating a huge gathering, elaborate arrangements were made by various departments.

According to police, over a lakh devotees visited the temple and more than 4,000 police personnel were pressed into service to regulate the crowd.

HR & CE minister Sevvoor S Ramachandran along with minister S Valarmathi, Principal District Judge S Kumaraguru and District Collector K Rajamani took part in the event.

Senior pontiffs from several mutt were also participated in the Maha Kumbabisheham.
