‘Dam may threaten sovereignty’
Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai said national integrity will be affected if a dam is constructed at Mekedatu. “People in Tamil Nadu will revolt against the move,” he said in Karur on Tuesday.

After inaugurating the new police station at Thanthnimalai in Karur, Thambidurai told reporters that, if Karnataka wants to generate electricity from the Cauvery, the best place for that is Hogenakkal only and not Mekedatu. “Even late CM MGR had told that he had plans for building a dam in Hogenakkal for generating electricity, during his regime. So, if Karnataka needs electricity, Hogenakkal is the right choice for it. Building a dam in Mekedatu will only affect the national integration and the welfare of Tamil Nadu,” he added.
Meanwhile, he said that the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) had also said that no new dam will be built without the permission from Tamil Nadu, he said.
Meanwhile, in the Tiruchy protest meeting, MDMK leader Vaiko attacked the Centre in general and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in particular said that the Modi-led Centre may give permission for as many as dams. “We cannot demolish those dams but this would destroy the sovereignty,” he cautioned.
Similarly, DK president Veeramani pointed out, “We do not want a separate Tamil Nadu but you (Centre) force us to fight for that.”
