The video of the mob thrashing incident, recorded in a mobile camera by a member of the public, has gone viral on social media. According to police, the two bike-borne men had attempted to snatch three sovereigns of the gold chain of a woman from Vellalore, while she was going by walk-in Mullai Nagar.
However, the woman grabbed the chain hard and raised an alarm. Acting swiftly, the local public rushed to her rescue, however, the two men managed to speed away in their two-wheeler. Not to let them away, a group of men chased them in vehicles and caught them a little distance away.
The culprits were then tied to a tree and thrashed by the public. One of the women was seen hitting the duo repeatedly with a wooden log. On receiving information, the Podanur police rushed to the spot and identified the two men as Vijayaraghavan (25) and Karthik (24) from Chennai.
Inquiries revealed that the duo had also snatched four sovereigns of gold chain from Ramadevi (71) from PN Pudur in a similar fashion before trying their luck with another woman in Vellalore.
“They got arrested in Chennai for chain snatching and came out on bail from prison only recently,” police said. The Podanur police have registered a case and further inquiries are on.
