Southern Railways recommends tourist tickets in Chennai’s suburban services
People visiting the city either for business or personal reasons need no longer buy ‘costly’ monthly passes to travel in and around the city for a day or two. The Southern Railway (SR) has sent a proposal to the Railway Board (RB) to introduce tourist tickets in the four suburban sections, Chennai Beach – Chengalpet, Chennai Beach – Velachery, Chennai to Gummidipoondi and Chennai to Tiruvallur.

In reply to a member of Zonal Rail Users Consultative Committee (ZRUCC), the meeting of which was conducted here on Friday, SR officials confirmed recommending the proposal to the Board.
DRUCC (Divisional Rail Users Consultative Committee) K Baskar who had raked up the issue in a division-level meeting last held told DT Next that the proposal would most likely to accepted and tourist tickets issued in the division.
Once introduced, commuters would be able to travel in all four suburban sections using just one ticket, and that too for a day or more, as they do in Western and Central Railway zones.
The two zones headquartered in Mumbai issue tourist tickets for a day, two and five days. “A commuter can travel from Mumbai CST to Karjet (en route Chennai) in Central Railway zone and Mumbai CST to Virar (en route Ahmedabad) in Western Railway zone using the same ticket,” Baskar pointed out.
“Unlike Mumbai, where two different zones are involved, there is one zone here. There should be no difficulty in executing the scheme in southern railway,” Baskar added, remarking that the tourist tickets would greatly benefit a city like Chennai which has a sizeable floating population.
“More than money, tourist tickets will save a lot of time for commuters as they would not have to wait in queues to buy multiple tickets,” an SR officer requesting anonymity said, denying notable economic benefits in the scheme. “Railway monthly passes are already cheap. Daily or weekly passes would not save much for the people,” the officer added.
