It was only a week ago that Shalini approached the Collector with a petition to allot a permanent house for her at the tenement of Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.

Shalini, who completed her Class 12 last year lives with her elder brother Vasanthakumar, who suffers from severe epilepsy and her younger sister Uma, who is in Class 9 at a government school.

After the girl’s father abandoned the family, when they were all small, their mother earned a living by doing odd jobs. She passed away two years ago.

Since then the siblings found it hard to lead a life as they could not even pay their monthly house rent. Though one of her uncle helped the family in a few way, Shalini had to forego her education and take up to odd jobs to take care of her brother and sister.

Moved by her plight, the Collector allotted a house at the TNSCB quarters in Erumapalayam. She handed over the order to Shalini at the new house. Speaking to media persons, the Collector said the district administration would extend all help for the two girls to pursue their education and also for the treatment of their brother.

“I had asked the Tahsildar to help the children in shifting their belongings from their old house to the new house. Their other requirements will also be looked after,” she said.
