Officials said that Vidya, a resident of Parvathy Agaram village in Polur taluk, had submitted a petition Collector KS Kandasamy during the weekly grievances day meeting on October 10. She mentioned that her mother was trying to fix a marriage for her despite her aspiration to continue her studies. She told Kandasamy that since she is under aged, she wished to continue her studies.
The collector contacted Vidya’s mother and advised her to drop the idea of her marriage, explaining to her that her daughter was still a minor.
He also added that Vidya would benefit only if she studied further.
To ensure well-being, Vidya was placed in the government children’s home by the district Social Welfare Department in Tiruvannamalai.
When asked about her ambition, Vidya told the collector that she wanted to complete her under-graduation.
On the advice of Kandasamy, Vidya agreed to pursue nursing. Following this, Kandasamy contacted a private nursing college in Vandavasi, which agreed to admit her in the four-year BSc nursing course.
Also, he contacted a private company, who agreed to sponsor the fee for hostel, tuition and examination for the four years, which amounted to Rs 3 lakhs. Kandasamy handed over a cheque for the amount to a representative of the nursing college on Tuesday.
