In Tiruchy, mild rain was experienced in rural and urban areas from Wednesday late night and on Thursday morning. The showers were heavy and widespread across the district. Rural areas like Pullambadi, Marungapuri, Kallakudi and Thuvakudi received heavy downpour from morning to 4 pm on Thursday.
Meanwhile, overnight rains at Peravurani in Thanjavur district, added to the misery of the Gaja-affected regions and those staying in thatched-roof houses bore the brunt as leaking roofs flooded the houses. The rains also caused felling of several trees which bore the brunt of the cyclone. In Adirampattinam, the thatched roof houses of fishermen were flooded owing to the heavy downpour in the region.
Electricity restoration works in these areas suffered a setback as works were halted due to the rain. The Peravurani area continued to be in dark for the 15th consecutive day as electricity was not restored.
Meanwhile, farmers welcomed the rains as there was no flow in the rivers and canals while standing crops required water.
The rain was a boon as electricity supply to pump water is yet to be restored. The present showers provided the much-needed relief to the farmers, who said the rain water would be a booster shot for the standing crop as it would support the crop growth.
Southern districts too received moderate rainfall on Thursday as it started drizzling from around 8 am.
Madurai experienced incessant rainfall till 2 pm and the sky remained overcast throughout the day. Similarly, parts of Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga also experienced moderate showers.
