Mekedatu dam: Move SC, obtain stay without delay, DMK tells ruling party

Stalin also advised the ruling AIADMK to immediately move the Supreme Court and obtain a stay without delay.  “The AIADMK would be compelled to own full responsibility for creating a dark chapter in the Cauvery River Water history, if it fails,” Stalin cautioned. The DMK president also appealed to Karnataka government to not adamantly go ahead with the project in the interest of two-state ties and Tamil Nadu farmers.  

The anti-Tamil Nadu approach of the ruling BJP, which has granted permission to the dam, unmindful of the opposition to the project from the state, has forced Tamils to erupt in anger, Stalin who is also the Leader of Opposition remarked, charging the AIADMK regime with engaging in collecting awards and organising festivals while relinquishing the rights of Tamil Nadu to the Centre and neighbouring states. Accusing Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami of secretly making an unwritten pact with the BJP regime to compromise TN’s rights on Cauvery issue, the LoP wondered why the CM had not raked up the issue during his recent meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

Seeking to know if it was enough for the CM to write letters to the PM, Stalin also asked why the CM who met the PM recently had failed to prevent the Centre from granting permission to Mekadatu dam. Stalin also opined that the negligent and egotistic attitude of the AIADMK regime has allowed the Centre to easily grant permission for the dam project. PMK founder S Ramadoss too asked the state to move the SC immediately to stall the construction of a dam by Karnataka.
