Elderly couple ill-treated by sons get back their land
An elderly couple, who was ill-treated by their two sons after bequeathing their five acres of land to them, sought the help of Collector KS Kandasamy to get the land registered again in their name on Monday.
Tiruvannamalai
Officials identified the couple as Kannan (75) and Poongavanam (60) from Vedanatham village near Kilpennathur. Seven years ago, Kannan transferred the lands to their two sons, Palani and Selvam, hoping that they would take care of him and his wife.
However, both the sons neglected the couple and did not provide food or clothes. Selvam, the younger son, had allegedly assaulted Kannan on a few occasions.Â
Sources said that at one stage the couple were forced to beg. They also spent a few nights on the streets.Â
Pushed to the extreme, Kannan and Poongavanam decided to petition to the collector explaining their plight on November 11 during the weekly grievance day meeting. Â
Kandasamy, immediately ordered the Tiruvannamalai RDO to initiate action under the Parents and Senior Citizens Maintenance and Welfare Act 2007. The official said that under the act it was possible to redeem the property from children if they failed to care of their aged parents.
Though Kannan sought only for 60 cents of his land, officials went through the district administrative tribunal to revoke the deed and issued a new patta to the couple where Kannan received 2.16 acres and Poongavan received 2.85 acres land.
