183 houses on Noyyal banks get eviction notice
Eviction notices were issued to over 183 houses encroaching Noyyal river banks in Coimbatore district, on Tuesday.
Coimbatore
After a joint inspection, the officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), Water Resources Department and Village Administration, found as many as 183 houses were built encroaching the banks of river Noyyal.
Following this, a team of officials from different government departments accompanied by Singanallur police, made a door to door visit in Kamatchipuram area, on Tuesday and issued eviction notices. The officials have asked them to vacate their houses within 21 days.
The officials also warned of demolishing the encroached houses if the families fail to vacate within the stipulated time. However, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board officials said that the encroached residents were asked to vacate thrice already.
According to an official from TNPCB, “Around 240 houses were built at ‘pudhu nagaram’ near Sulur and they are ready to be occupied. The residents should first co-operate and vacate their houses from the encroached river banks. Then, based on the government’s recommendation, the residents can move into the tenements. Houses will be allotted in the next phase.”
The residents stated that they have been living in the same place for about 50 years, which they find convenient as it is nearer to the workplace, besides school and colleges for children.
However, they are worried that the TNPCB tenements are very far away and it would be difficult for them to commute to the city daily.
