319 agri officers involved in crop damage enumeration
Nearly, 319 agriculture department officers have been engaged in field level enumeration of the crop damage due to the Gaja cyclone in Thanjavur district.

Teams of Assistant Agriculture officers, Assistant seed certifying officers, Agriculture officers have been constituted to enumerate the losses and they have been assessing the damages.
As many as 126 officers from Thanjavur district, a total of 193 officers from Tiruchy, Perambalur, Karur, Vellore and Villupuram districts are engaged in the work.
Zonal level monitoring officers in the cadre of Assistant Directors of Agriculture, Assistant Executive Engineers of the agricultural engineering department, Deputy Directors of agriculture department were nominated. While, 13 officers from Directorate of Agriculture, Chennai are coordinating the work, an official release from K Nedunchezhian, Joint Director of Agriculture stated.
Tiruchy, Karur banana farmers seek compensation
Farmers from Tiruchy carrying damaged banana crops approached the district collector on Monday demanding proper assessment of the cyclone damage and adequate compensation for the loss.
The Gaja cyclone had devastated the entire delta district and damaged crops in several lakhs of hectares. In Tiruchy, banana was cultivated in around 1,800 hectares and over one lakh banana crops were damaged by the cyclone. Tiruchy and Kaur districts too suffered extensive damage.
The cyclone damaged banana plantations in Kilikoodu, Uthamarseeli, Thiruvalarsolai, Vayalur, Pettaivaithalaim, Kulumani, Lalgudi, Thottiyam and Mancahnallur in Tiruchy district, and the entire Kulithalai region in Karur district was also affected.Â
On Monday, farmers with damaged banana crops ap-proached the Tiruchy Collector K Rajamani and appealed for a compensation of Rs 5 lakh per acre. They also de-manded proper assessment by an expert committee, as the Centre’s team did not visit these two regions. District collector assured the farmers group to forward their demands to the government.
