    Government to distribute new textbooks to students

    As cyclone Gaja ravaged more than four districts in the state, Tamil Nadu government has decided to distribute free text books for all school children, who has lost that in the calamity.

    The School Education Department said students studying in private schools will also get textbooks as per the requirement.


    A senior official from the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation said, “Elaborate arrangements have been made through various agencies to transport text books in the flood affected areas within a week.”


    Accordingly, the books will be distributed to the affected students studying from primary level to higher secondary level. “After it was reported that thousands of school students studying not only in government schools but also in private institutions have lost their textbooks in the cyclone and flood affected areas,” he added.


    The official pointed out that many students especially in Nagapattinam and Pudukottai districts were severely affected by floods. “Some students even lost their uniforms, notebooks, shoes, slippers and bags in the flood,” he said. “All the required items will be supplied to the affected schools within a week,” he said adding “The respective school management will take steps in distributing them to the needy students once they receive it.”


    According to the official, the distribution of the textbooks and other school items will be based on the request from the school management even through phone call. “Priority will be given to send the textbooks first. Rest of the school items will be sent in due course based on the requirement,” he said.


    Sources from the School Education Department said that about eight thousand government schools are functioning in Napattinam, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Trichy and Pudukottai districts of the state.
