Acting on a tip-off, a team of FSSAI officials led by B Vijayalalithambigai, the designated officer in Coimbatore district, carried out a raid in a godown owned by one Govind Singh on Bharathi Road near Telungupalayam.
Following a thorough check, the officials seized the huge stock of banned tobacco products worth several lakhs. They then sealed the godown. The FSSAI officials are questioning the godown owner Govind Singh over the issue.
This seizure comes within a few days after FSSAI officials seized around 450 kg of gutkha products from a godown at Annai Indira Nagar in Ponnaiarajapuram.
The FSSAI officials have upped their vigil against the smuggling of banned tobacco into Coimbatore from Bengaluru in Karnataka, where there is no ban on gutkha products.
