Electricity restored in Dindigul’s urban pockets
Cyclone Gaja-hit Dindigul is limping back to normalcy gradually as restoration works are on in full swing.

About 50 per cent of damaged electricity poles in the plains had been restored and power supply was also resumed in most of the urban areas and it would take two days to completely restore the supply in the district, Dindigul Collector TG Vinay said on Sunday.
Kodaikanal, the sought after tourism destination, was largely affected by the cyclone. Yet another landslide occurred near Kurusadi on Batlagundu – Kodaikanal Ghat Road on Sunday. However, no casualty has been reported in the wake of the landslide. It occurred while the Highways Department was carrying out restoration works on the damaged stretch, sources said. The Batlagundu - Kodaikanal Ghat Road is open only to light vehicles for the next two days until restoration works on this stretch were completed.
Apart from Kodaikanal, parts of Oddanchathram, Vedasanthur, Vadamadurai, Thoppampatti, Reddiarchatram, Sanarpatti and Natham were also badly affected by the cyclone, sources said.
As many as 4,300 electricity poles were damaged. Teams comprising 280 personnel of the Tangedco from Madurai and Karur were deployed in the restoration works.
Gensets had been arranged in 10 villages to provide uninterrupted water supply to the localities. Besides, tanker lorries were also used to supply water to rural areas. Nearly, 100 uprooted trees were cleared from arterial roads, including Kodaikanal to Palani and Batlagundu.
Referring to crop damages, he said maize and banana farmers were mostly affected in Oddanchathram, Palani and Reddiarchatram.
As for cyclone hit Sivaganga district, restoration works were nearing completion, said Collector J Jayakanthan.
In Ramanathapuram district, the impact from the cyclone was minor as it caused damages to 20 houses and left 17 electricity poles and one transformer damaged. Luckily, no fishing boat suffered any damage despite windy conditions.
