Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai on Monday stressed that the release of Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts was in the hands of the Governor now as the state government had completed all formalities on its part.

Speaking to reporters in Karur, Thambidurai said, the Tamil Nadu cabinet had already recommended the release of all the seven convicts, including Perarivalan, in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case as per the provisions in the Constitution and had sent the copy of the resolution to the Governor who actually should accept it as per law.
“We have been expecting a positive response from the Governor and in a democracy, the recommendations of an elected government should be honoured”, Thambidurai said.
Meanwhile, Thambidurai insisted that schemes introduced by the Centre should be named in local language of the respective states. “Will the people of Tamil Nadu understand names like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Antyodaya Anna Yojana, Grameen Kaushalya Yojana and Jan Dhan Yojana? Those schemes should be named in Tamil. Only then the people will understand the schemes,” Thambidurai said, and added that these names sound like slogan recitals and so they should be named in Tamil. “People should not be confused with muddled terms”, Thambidurai stressed.
