Book PWD officials for sand mining: Activists
Environmental activists led by Cauvery River Protection Movement coordinator R Mugilan on Saturday approached Karur Collector T Anbalagan seeking action against those mining sand illegally at Kulithalai.

They submitted a petition to the collector stating that an illegal sand godown has been functioning at Kulithalai. Mugilan claimed that PWD officials have a nexus with local politicians and the sand mafia, which allows the latter to commit the crime without any disturbance.
The activists cited the High Court order against sand mining in the Cauvery and collected a series of photo evidences depicting the illegal activities.
After submitting the petition, Mugilan said the court had clearly directed not to dredge sand in the Cauvery as the sand miners have dug the river bed beyond the permissible level.
The activists said the Cauvery, which is the lifeline of the people in the entire region, has been spoiled.
“The PWD officials responsible for this situation should be brought before the law. They should be detained under the Goondas Act as they destroy the environment and loot the natural resource,” Mugilan stressed.
