    Tirunelveli tops in violating Supreme Court order on bursting crackers

    Police have launched crackdown on those burst crackers in violation of the Supreme Court order, which stipulated a two-hour time to burst crackers, on Deepavali.

    Based on the order, Tamil Nadu government fixed 6 am to 7 am and 7 pm to 8 pm to burst crackers during Deepavali. But, several persons were found bursting crackers beyond the stipulated time.


    Such acts caught the eyes of police personnel, who booked cases under legal provisions of Sections 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 285 – (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter, which endangers human life or likely to cause injury to another person) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender).


    Among districts of southern region, Tirunelveli stood high with a maximum case of 111 on a charge of violating the rules. Theni police registered the least with four cases. Madurai City comes next to Tirunelveli after 90 were booked on a similar charge.


    Apart from Madurai city, 38 cases had been booked in various parts of the district, sources said. While 16 such cases had been filed in Sivagangai, 33 cases were booked in Ramanathapuram, sources added.


    In Dindigul, a total of 38 cases were booked against those found violating the order. Those facing the cases would be summoned to pay fine in courts under various jurisdictions.


    In Virudhunagar, 72 cracker violation cases were booked in the district. As for as Thoothukudi is concerned, 34 cases were registered and 23 cases in Kanniyakumari.
