Decline in power consumption brings down generation in Tuticorin Thermal Power Station

According to sources, currently, the first unit and the fourth unit, each of which has a capacity of generating 210 MW, are in service. The decline in electricity consumption demand has prompted the authorities of Load Despatch Centre to suspend power generation from the TTPS. Based on a directive, these three units had been kept on a standby.

“Since it was Deepavali, people were busy moving around with shopping. Moreover, several manufacturing industries and factories, which were shut ahead of the Deepavali, are yet to resume to normal routine. The industries and factories would normally consume large amount of electricity, as these units draw electricity through high tension lines,” sources added.

“These factors were primarily considered as the reasons for having reduced the power consumption. Normally during these days, power consumption across Tamil Nadu would between 12,000 MW and 13,000 MW. But, it came down to 11,850 MW during 6 pm to 10 pm and 10,300 MW during 5 am to 9 am on Tuesday.”

Sources said that, on the other hand, wind power generation was abysmally low during the off season. This trend would continue till January and the wind power generation would begin in February in Aralvaimozhi and later pick in Kayathar area in May next year.
