Heavy rain lashes Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts

After Northeast Monsoon kicked-off in Tamil Nadu, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts received heavy rain in the past few days. However, the climate saw some sun in the last two days. Yet the dawns were  foggy. Meanwhile, the whole of Tamil Nadu experienced heavy downpour. Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts experienced heavy rainfall.

The downpour that started last night, didn't stop till this morning as it lashed the whole of South Tamil Nadu. The Western Ghats in the Tirunelveli district especially, witnessed heavy downpour. Importantly, hilly areas of Papanasam, Courtallam and Manimuthar received heavy rainfall.

The Manimuthar dam received rainfall like never before in its history.  This area received, 286 mm of rain due to which the water level in the dam raised at a rate of 2877 cubic feet.

With the inflow of water at this rapid rate, the water level in the dam grew 3 feet to 89.40 feet in just one day.

Even in Papanasam the rain fall was unusual. The 106 mm rainfall lead to the inflow of water into the dam at the rate of 4748 cubic centimeter. As a result, in just one day, the water level in the dam increased 6 feet and is at 105.60 feet.

After the heavy rains, the waterfalls have seen really large amount of water. As a result, the water gushed forth crossing the safety arch, leading to a temporary ban for the tourist from taking bath there.

Since it continuously rained till the morning, the weather remained cold. Kalakkadu witnessed heavy rainfall too. As a result, the canals and streams were flooded.

The following numbers show the amount of rainfall as witnessed by various places in the Tirunelveli district.

Kulasekarapattinam, Sathankulam and Tiruchendur areas witnessed heavy downpour. Sathankulam witnessed 219 mm, wheeras in Kulasekarapattinam around 112 mm of rain was recorded.

Thoothukudi experienced moderate rainfall as Srivaikundam and Maniyachi areas saw extensive rainfall. The roads were flooded in these areas due to continuous rain. Since the rain continued in the morning as well, the district collector announced that the private schools remain closed today.
