    Surprise DVAC raids across TN yield ‘gifts’ worth Rs 44 lakh

    In one of the biggest pre-Deepavali surprise raids at various government offices across the State on Thursday, sleuths from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) seized unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 44.30 lakh from 24 premises, including RTOs, sub-registrar offices, Aavin office, TNPCB, PWD and Tasmac offices.

    DVAC officials noted that in most cases, money seized was part of Deepavali gifts given to various government officials.


    The highest amount (Rs 14.80 lakh) was seized from the office of general manager Aavin, Vellore. Sleuths seized Rs 9.98 lakh from RTO office in Tiruvannamalai and Rs.3.9 lakh from the Cuddalore RTO office. In Chennai, raids in the offices of north and south district managers of Tasmac yielded Rs 80,000 and Rs 52,600 seized respectively. The team seized Rs 2.49 lakh from the office of district environmental engineer, TNPCB. At SRO in Sriperumbudur, Rs 28,500 was seized.


    Search at SRO in Villupuram yielded Rs 88,000. Another Rs 1 53 lakh was found at the RTO office in Kovilpatti while Rs 34,000 was seized from the HR & CE official in Palani. In Krishnagiri at Hosur RTO check post, Rs 1.32 lakh was seized. Sleuths seized Rs 87,000 from the RTO office in Tenkasi, while Rs 44,500 was seized from RTO Srirangam in Tiruchy. Raid at the Pudukottai RTO yielded Rs 55,925. In The Nilgiris, sleuths seized Rs 2.01 lakh from the PWD office, while at Theni RTO, officials seized Rs 14,680. At Erode RTO, Rs 55,900 was seized, while Rs 84, 450 was seized from Mettur RTO, Salem. At Myladuthurai RTO, Rs 4,000 was seized while Rs 32, 900 was seized from Karur RTO. In Namakkal Rs 40,900 was seized from SRO office, Rs 10,000 from SRO in Devakottai Sivagangai. The team also seized Rs 6,000 from the municipal office, Keezhakarai in Ramanathapuram. More on P7

    Vehicle inspector dies during raid


    A Motor Vehicle Inspector died of shock during the DVAC raid at the RTO office here. Sleuths seized unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 1.04 lakh. Even as the sleuths were conducting a search, Motor Vehicle Inspector Babu, 52, complained of chest pain, lost consciousness and was rushed to a private hospital. Doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
