“The conditions are favorable for the northeast monsoon rains to spread over the rest Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and adjoining areas of south interior Karnataka and Rayalseema during the next 24 hours. The coastal areas are likely to receive heavy rains,” said deputy director general S Balachandran.

The trough of low pressure at the mean sea level from southwest Bay of Bengal to west-central Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh now lies over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka. A cyclonic circulation lies over south Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood.

In two days, heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, while light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely at most parts of the State.

The city would receive occasional rains or thunderstorms at most of the places for the next 48 hours.

Popular weather blogger Pradeep John said Chennai to Cuddalore may receive good rains from the incoming band of clouds. “The huge bands of clouds which was around delta region has been spinning up towards Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chennai belt. We can see the shorelines of Chennai showing awesome clouds moving in. ECR/OMR might get the first spell. This is going to be a good spell,” he said .
