State strives to improve infrastructure at govt colleges
Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology will take up improvement of science and technology activities at all government colleges at a cost of Rs 14.48 crore with the aim to create a better eco system for research and development.

The government will be providing financial support to improve the infrastructure like laboratory equipment and instrument facilities in government colleges across the State.
At present the State has 139 governments and 162 government-aided arts and science colleges. A senior official from the Higher Education Department said that apart from improving infrastructure facilities, the science and technology will be popularised among students
in colleges.
“This objective is achieved through conduct of science exhibitions, training programmes and popular lecturers on various aspects of science and technology,” he said adding with the support of Department of Science and Technology about 70 science programmes will be organised.
According to the official, financial assistance will also be provided to organisations, scientists and authors for publishing science magazines for the benefit of the students to enable science and technology publications in colleges.
To update student’s knowledge on the current syllabus and new areas, in-service training will be provided to science professors. This programme will be conducted for five days in science colleges. “About 500 teachers will be benefitted from the training programme,” the official said.
Similarly, a programme called science and technology capacity building for industrial needs will also be launched. “This programme is organised with a collaboration of industries and colleges including polytechnics to enable self-employment,” he added.
During the first phase, the programme will be conducted in 10 colleges at southern districts of Tamil Nadu. Student’s project scheme will also be enhanced by allocating more financial assistance of Rs 10,000 for final year science students, who are interested in research projects.
