Police said M Manikandan (20) and P Rajavelu (27), both hailing from Tharamangalam in Salem district, were erecting huge banners a few days ago to welcome Chief Minister during his visit to Salem on October 20, when they suffered a shock. “They unfortunately came in contact with an overhead live wire and were thrown off. The duo was immediately rushed to the Salem Government Hospital for treatment in a critical condition,” police said.
However, Rajavelu succumbed to injuries without responding to treatment on Tuesday, while the condition of Manikandan remains serious and he is under critical care. Following this, the relatives of the deceased person staged a protest in front of the post mortem room in the hospital refusing to receive his body. They sought action against those who called the men to erect flex banners without taking safety precautions. The protestors also demanded for a compensation to be paid to the kin of the deceased person. After talks, the family members agreed to receive the body.
