Dengue outbreak: More diagnostic centres opened
With yet another person in the State succumbing to dengue on Tuesday, the Health Department has swung into action and increased the number of centres to diagnose the disease through the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test to 125, up from the previous 31 centres.

Also on Tuesday, Health Minister C Vijaya Bhaskar flagged off 82 mobile healthcare units, each comprising both medical and mosquito control teams. Addressing mediapersons at the Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital here, Vijaya Bhaskar said: “Every year ahead of monsoon, there is a sharp rise in fever cases. However, steps are being taken to ensure the affected persons are treated and that the disease doesn’t spread.”
officials said that in places where more then three cases of fever have been reported, immediate steps are being taken to assess the patients and offer treatment to the affected persons. Fogging machines are also being deployed to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes, they added.
The Directorate of Public Health has established a 24-hour control room. “Fever cases can be reported at the control room and affected persons will be directed accordingly for treatment and diagnosis,” a source said.
College student dies
A Tamilarasan (19), a second year student of a government college in Udumalpet and residing at Chinnakampalayam near Dharapuram in Tirupur district, died due to dengue at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Tuesday. He was down with severe fever over the last few days.

In an effort to prevent mosquito breeding at the source, the district administration on Tuesday launched a campaign. As many as 175 teams comprising a total of 600 health department staff went around several residential areas in the city.
