Panel quizzes student over Bhagat Singh anniversary
A first year MA student of Government Arts and Science College, A Malathi, who was suspended for celebrating Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary, appeared before the disciplinary committee for an enquiry, on Monday.

The four-member committee led by professor Jayapandian raised questions as to why Malathi organised the function on September 28 despite being denied permission by the principal and the tutor. She was denied permission as she sought to organise the event at a short notice on the same day.
In the one-hour enquiry session, Malathi was also asked if she was triggered by anyone from behind. The student was asked to give her explanation in writing for organising the function without permission.
The committee members said that they would submit the report to the college principal, who will take a final call on revoking her suspension issue. “It will also be decided further if any disciplinary action needs to be taken on the student for violating college rules,” said a member.
Meanwhile, Malathi said that she expressed her views to the committee members for failing to hold an enquiry before issuing a suspension. “They did not threaten me and were very co-ordinal with me,” she said.
Suspension of Malathi on October 1 triggered uproar in political circles as it was termed as a suppression of democratic freedom.
