    Masked man robs jewels at knifepoint

    A masked robber stole 17 sovereigns from a woman by threatening her son at knifepoint, in Coimbatore on Saturday night.

    According to police, Ilavarasi, 33, had gone to the terrace to bring dried pulses, when she noticed a man scaling the compound and jumping into the premises.

    “As she came down panicked, the robber placed a knife on her six-year-old son and threatened to kill him, if she refused to give away her jewels. When she initially refused to budge, the robber attacked her with the knife, causing injuries on her hand,” police said.

    Her husband Murthy, working as a manager in a private mill and residing at Nanjappa Devar Street near Sulur, was away when the incident happened.

    Frightened by this, the woman gave away five sovereigns of chain that she was wearing and ten sovereigns kept in the cupboard, besides Rs 5,000 in cash, police added.

    However, the robber escaped from the spot. On receiving a complaint, the Sulur police registered a case and are on the lookout for the culprit.

    “We suspect a few more persons to be involved in the robbery as others kept a watch outside the house. The accused, who got into the house, was aged around 30 years. Special teams of police are on the lookout for the culprit’s based on certain clues,” said a policeman.
