With the extended pooja holidays ending on Sunday, a huge crowd gathered along the river banks in several parts of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts for the Maha Pushkaram, which is celebrated once in 144 years.

The unusual crowd resulted in traffic chaos near the Nellaiyappar temple in Tirunelveli junction and Vannarapettai. Since catchment areas received a good amount of rainfall in parts of Tirunelveli district, there was a heavy flow of water in the river. As a precautionary measure, Fire and rescue service personnel were kept on alert.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president Tamilisai Soundararajan also joined the Maha Pushkaram celebrations at Kurukuthurai in Tirunelveli district. She later visited Murappanadu, which also lies on the river bank.

Speaking to reporters, Tamilisai said the State government has failed to provide proper arrangements in ‘Theerthavaris’ and added that the issue would be taken to the attention of the Chief Minister.

Responding to a query, she expressed scepticism on the possibility of simultaneous assembly and parliamentary elections being held in TN within the next six months. Further, she said the State government has been maintaining cordial relationship with the Centre.
