NE monsoon may set in this week: Met department
As the complete withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is likely to commence in the next 24 hours, favourable conditions prevail for the onset of northeast monsoon thereafter, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre.
Chennai
An in-duty RMC officer said the withdrawal of southwest monsoon commenced late this year. Also, an earlier onset of monsoon was disrupted due to cyclone Titli in the Bay of Bengal and hence the withdrawal was halted. Â
Meanwhile, IMD has also forecast normal northeast monsoon this year. While rainfall over TN is most likely to be above normal, it cited neutral El Nino conditions in the Pacific and the neutral Indian Ocean Dipole, both of which have a bearing on rainfall in the Indian subcontinent, as supporting evidence for the outlook. The northeast monsoon from October to December is major rainfall period for Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
