Mixed reaction from crew to electric buses
While the top management of the MTC is excited about the introduction of electric buses in the city’s fleet, the move has evoked a mixed response from the staff as they fear job loss if a majority of the buses are converted into electric vehicles.

Recently, the state government had announced to allocate 80 new electric buses for the city and 20 buses for Coimbatore.
“The authorities claim that electric vehicles require no maintenance. Indirectly, it means that the maintenance team will be trimmed,” State Transport Employees Union president P Balakrishnan said.
The purchase of electric vehicles involves a one-time huge investment. In the context, the employees rue that tariff in the electric buses will be high. S Kannan, a driver attached to the Adyar Depot said, “The purchasing power of the common public should be factored in. The Corporation should understand their consumers before introducing a new system.”
Am MTC top official said, “It will take time to replace the existing fleet with the electric vehicles. The authority will ensured that there is no job loss.”
