Northeast monsoon to set in after Oct 20

According to an IMD forecast bulletin, conditions are becoming favourable for withdrawal southwest monsoon from the entire country around October 20. “Also, conditions are likely to become favourable for the onset of northeast monsoon thereafter,” the bulletin said.

Northeast monsoon would usually begin around October 20. This year, the IMD has forecasted 112 per cent, which is normal rainfall for the state.

It may be recalled that the IMD had predicted monsoon onset on October 8 and issued a red alert in Tamil Nadu. However, the red alert was later repealed, and monsoon failed to set in due to two simultaneous cyclonic storms in Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

The IMD also forecasted heavy rainfall in isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The bulletin predicted a formation of low-pressure area over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 23.

According to Regional Meteorological Centre, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam received 17mm and 30.4mm of rainfall for 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday. Mettupalayam and Jayamkondam received the highest rainfall of 80mm and 70mm respectively.
