The sleuths attached to CBI, led by SP Saravanan, made on-the-spot assessments in the premises of Thoothukudi Collectorate, Third Mile, Anna Nagar and Threspuram - the localities where violence had broken out.

The incident occurred on May 22, when protesters marched towards the Collectorate while seeking the closure of the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi. In the wake of the incident, over hundred people including police personnel suffered injuries. Besides, over 70 vehicles, considered as public property, were damaged during the violence.

Cases were filed by the police stationed in Sipcot, Thoothukudi South, Thoothukudi North and Muthaiyapuram in connection with the incidents. The plant was closed and sealed on May 28 based on Government order.

Initially after enquiry by the local police, the government transferred the cases to CB-CID for further probe, following which CB-CID sleuths conducted enquiries relating to five cases. However, the Madras High Court on August 14 had passed orders transferring the cases to the CBI after hearing petitions regarding the same.

The CB-CID team handed over all documents pertaining to the investigation to the CBI on October 8. Cases were filed against the incidents of violence under 13 Sections including attempt to murder, threatening to kill, obstructing government officials from work and attacking with weapon, of IPC.

According to local police sources, documents required for investigation would be furnished during the probe. The initial probe by the CBI would last for three days in Thoothukudi, sources said.
