The deceased was identified as V Neelamega Amaran (34) of Surveyor Colony near K Pudur in Madurai. He faced four cases of ganja peddling, including three filed by the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB). Involved in the crime since 2004, Amaran was the key accused in a case involving the huge seizure of 150 kilos of ganja.

Although based in Madurai, he frequently visited Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Inspector of Police, NIB,  Madurai Unit, G Lakshmi said a history sheet was opened against Amaran in 2013-14. He was a habitual offender and his acts of crime only concerned with ganja peddling, she said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, NIB, Madurai Unit, P S Ramakrishnan said previous enmity among drug traffickers could be a part of the reason behind the killing.

When contacted, Inspector General of Police (South Zone) K P Shanmuga Rajeswaran and Superintendent of Police (Madurai) N Manivannan, however, denied Amaran had accompanied the police team.
