After a thud, the villagers, who were asleep in their houses, woke up and rushed to the spot. They were shock to find the temple roof badly damaged by the collapsed tamarind tree, which was believed to be around 300 years old. Besides, the tree also damaged idols of deities and the temple vehicle.

The locals immediately informed the HR&CE officials as the debris can be cleared only after an inspection of the site by a team of the department. Sources said that this temple, along with similar Gangai amman temples at Guidyattam and Paradarami, used to attract large number of devotees.

According to the officials, the roots of the tree could have been weakened by rain, which must have led to the crash.

Locals are now waiting for the official order to chop off the intruding branches and commence repair of the temple roof.
