Villagers oppose new Tasmac shop
Alleging that a new liquor outlet that is rumoured to come up in their neighbourhood would cause trouble for women, men including farmers, and the public who use a burial ground nearby, scores of villagers from Tharatchi Union in Uthukottai circle submitted a petition to Tiruvallur District Collector on Monday, requesting him not to give permission for the shop.

According to the villagers, they have come to know that efforts were on to obtain permission to open a Tasmac liquor retail store in MGR Nagar, Tharatchi area, that has about 1,000 residents. The space that was earmarked for the shop was in the area that is surrounded by agricultural land. Also, the women from the locality, especially those without toilet facilities at their homes, have been using the space to attend to nature’s call, the petition said, adding that there was also a burial ground in the area.
“In these circumstances, opening a Tasmac shop will affect the livelihood of the people working there, and also affect the movements of the people, especially the women folk,” the petitioners charged.
