An old man from Jharkhand, who was suffering from amnesia and wandering near Tiruvannamalai collector’s office, was rescued on Saturday and reunited with his family after five years.
Tiruvannamalai
The man, who as clad in a lungi and moving around with a walking stick, was spotted by the Collector on September 28 during the grievance day meeting.
When Kandasamy walked up to him and tried to strike a conversation, he learnt that the man could not speak Tamil and knew only English and Hindi. The Collector brought the man to his office and gave food and a new set of clothes.
After efforts by revenue, ex-servicemen’s welfare and police officials, the man wrote his name as Aloysius Barnabas Toppu, a resident of Jharkhand.
With his clue, the district police contacted their counterparts in Jharkhand, who managed to identify Toppu’s son Anil and inform him that his father had been traced to Tiruvannamalai.
The Collector also made travel arrangements for Anil, to come to Tiruvannamalai. After reuniting with his father, Anil thanked the collector and other officials for their help.
Confirming that his father suffered from occasional bouts of amnesia, Anil said during one such occasion his father had left home and landed in Tiruvannamalai.
Kandasamy also made travel arrangements for both Aloysius and his son to return to their native from Tiruvannamalai.
