It is said that Raja (45), along with his wife R Sundari (40), was residing at JJ Nagar, Ramanujar Nagar Colony, in Karur and the couple had three children. While the elder daughter Ragavi (15) of Class 11, was studying at a school in Chennai, their two sons, Ranjith (13) and Raghu (11), were staying in a hostel in Karur. It is said, Ragavi had returned home following the recent red alert issued by the IMD.

There was a power cut in the locality for the past three days. Though power was restored in the area following complaint from residents, Sundari’s house did not receive supply due to some snag.

So, Sundari was using the generator to run the domestic appliances.

Raja, who owned a fruit stall, went to sleep at the shop. On Sunday night, Sundari switched on the generator before going to bed.

Sources alleged that the smoke that emanated from the generator might have entered through a hole in the room where Sundari and Ragavi were sleeping. Since the room had no proper ventilation facilities, both must have inhaled the toxic smoke and suffocated to death.

Karur Town police have registered a case and are investigating.
