'Corruption in appointment of Vice Chancellors in Tamil Nadu'

In a shocking revelation on the appointment of Vice-Chancellors to various universities across the State, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday claimed that such appointments also involved corruption to the tune of several crores of rupees.

“I could not believe  the degree of corruption involved. I then decided to bring about a change,” he said.

Addressing a conference on `Enhancing Quality Education’ here, Purohit said he had selected nine Vice Chancellors for state-run varsities purely based on merit and their qualifications.

Reacting to Governor’s statement, Higher Education Minister KP Anbalagan told reporters that the appointment of Vice Chancellors had nothing to do with the Higher Education Department.

The Minister said the State selects candidates and passes the information to the search committee, which then selects three candidates and forwards it to the Governor. “Thereafter, he (Governor) only appoints one of the three candidates as VC and the State government does not interfere in the selection process,” he added. Claiming that the Governor’s statement was confusing, Anbalagan said, “I can’t understand the basis of the allegations.”
