St Joseph’s College legacy: From 1 to 7,612 students
The 175th year celebration of St Joseph’s College in Tiruchy has been scheduled on Friday. Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar, who is expected to participate in the event, would inaugurate the renovated museum and launch the works for the St Joseph’s Law College, said College Rector Reverend Dr Leonard Fernando on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters here, Fernando said the college had its humble beginning in 1844 at Nagapattinam with just one student and was shifted to Tiruchy in 1883. Today the institution has 7,612 students on its rolls.
“With a motto ‘Pro Bono et Vero (For the Good and the Truth), the prestigious institution had always upheld and radiated goodness and truth to impart qualitative higher education,” he said.
On Friday (October 5), Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar is to inaugurate the 175th year celebrations by throwing open the renovated museum. Provincial, Jesuit Madurai Province and Chairman of St Joseph’s Society Reverend Dr Danis Ponniah, District Collector K Rajamani, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University Dr P Manisankar are also expected to participate in the function.
“The year-long celebrations would culminate with a grand marathon in Tiruchy after a pilgrimage of staff, students and alumni from the original place of the college in Nagapattinam. Steps would be initiated to start St Joseph’s Law College,” Fernando added.
