Nirmala Devi was accused of luring college girls into offering favours in return for academic gains. She was arrested on April 16 by Arupukkottai Town police after the audio tape of her luring the girls went viral on social media. After the case was handed over to the CB-CID, Murugan and S Karuppasamy, former research scholar of MKU, were also arrested.

The CB-CID filed charge sheets in connection with the case before the Virudhunagar Judicial Magistrate Court last month and handed over its copies to the accused.

On hearing the petitions, Justice G K Ilanthirayan said a bail plea of Karuppasamy, one of the accused in the case, was already dismissed. If bail was granted to the petitioners, there could be a chance of them destroying evidence connected to the case. Hence, the petitioners should face trial while in prison, the judge said, ordering the trial to be expedited. The lower court should conduct the trial on a daily basis and complete it, he said.
