While drivers of diesel-run autos demanded to be included in the pre-paid auto system, the passengers demanded an amicable solution and ensure smooth functioning of the service.

The pre-paid auto system was introduced at the railway station a few months ago. Since its launch, the auto drivers have clashed twice due to differences over certain issues. Following these incidents, railway officials had barred the entry of autos into the premises. However, town buses were allowed.

Recently, the auto drivers came together and requested the officials to resume the system. Heeding their appeal, the service was resumed on on September 21.

Around 50 autos running on petrol and 25 diesel autos were part of the service. Recently, nearly 50 diesel auto drivers demanded they also be included in the system. A meeting to discuss the issue was organised at the station on Tuesday during which an argument broke out between the petrol and diesel auto drivers.

Following this, the diesel auto drivers submitted a petition to the station manager K Ravindranath, who informed them that he would act after consulting the Southern Railway commercial section in Chennai. “As the issue is now becoming perennial, only the Southern Railway authorities can decide what can be done to ensure the service continues without any glitches,” he said.

However, the only advantage is that that the member autos of the prepaid system alone have not hiked the rates, while share autos and local auto drivers in the Fort City have increased the fare.

According to R Satish, an auto driver, “Autos plying on old bus stand–Arcot route have jacked up the fare. Local trips (involving travelling across three or four streets) will now cost Rs 40 as against Rs 30 earlier.”
