8 of family die on the spot after SUV rams into truck near Tiruchy
Eight people belonging to the same family, including two children and all residents of Pallikaranai in Chennai, were killed on the spot after the sports utility vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in rammed into the rear end of a stationary truck near Samayapuram Toll Plaza on the Tiruchy-Chennai national highway in the early hours of Sunday. Five others were seriously injured.

Police said the deceased were identified as M Subramani (65), his wife S Jayalakshmi (58), their sons S Balamurugan (42), S Vijayaraghavan (36) their kin V Gomathy (30), Manjunathan (40), M Nivetha (12) and M Kandasamy (11).
Five other occupants of the SUV, including other children, were admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Head Quarters Hospital here, where their condition was stated to be critical. Police said that the incident occurred when the driver of iron rods-laden truck had parked his vehicle near the toll plaza to relieve himself.Â
Preliminary reports said the driver of SUV had dozed off and lost control of the vehicle resulting in the accident. The family from Pallikaranai were on their way to Pettavaithalai village near Tiruchirapalli to stay in their newly constructed house, according to sources close to the family. The car was completely mangled due to the impact of the collision.
Tiruchirapalli Superintendent of Police Ziaul Haque visited the accident site and held inquiries. Samayapuram police have registered a case and arrested the truck driver S Venkatesh for parking the vehicle at an unauthorised place on the highway.
