Police said that R Raja alias Kathavarayan alias Kaliyarajan (54) of Mettu Street in Sethiathoppu, was sexually abusing his sister-in-law. Unable to tolerate the abuse, the woman informed her husband Velayutham and he picked up a quarrel with Kaliyarajan.

One such altercation in 1999 turned into fisticuffs. In a fit of rage, Kaliyarajan chopped Velayutham’s head and threw it into Manniyaru and dumped the torso at a spot on Kollidam bank near Anaikarai.

Subsequently, Tiruppanandal police registered a case and arrested six persons, including Kaliyarajan. Sometime later, all the six came out on bail and Kaliyarajan went absconding. The Kumbakonam court after completion of trial acquitted the five from the murder case in 2010. However, the police continued their search for Kaliyarajan.

Meanwhile, the police got a tip off that Kaliyarajan’s wife Kannagi was receiving frequent phone calls from north India. Following this, the cops tracked her phone and found that Kaliyarajan, who was convicted to life imprisonment in a murder case at Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, was lodged in Farukhabad central jail.

With this information, a team of the Tiruvidaimarudur police, led by the inspector Rajendran, rushed to UP, where they were shocked to learn that Kaliyarajan who escaped from Tamil Nadu joined the Chhota Rajan gang, in Mumbai and was involved in a murder case.

Later, the police obtained a warrant and brought him from UP to Tamil Nadu and produced him before the Kumbakonam court, on Thursday. Later, Kaliyarajan was lodged in Tiruchy central prison. He would be produced before the court again on Friday.
