Accordingly, as a pilot project, the story corners will be established to promote story hearing and telling habits among children in 160 schools. The idea aims to strengthen value education.

A senior official from Education Department said that initially, more than 500 teachers of these pilot schools will be trained in story telling techniques.

“Teachers will ensure the corners have paper, colours and pencils for children to write and draw. In addition, teachers will also be using the books from the corner to narrate stories,” the official shared and said that these corners will be established in government primary schools.

According to him, a relaxed, happy relationship between the storyteller and listener is established through drawing. He said, “This helps in building mutual confidence and stories help children know themselves and others, so that they can cope with the psychological problems they face while growing up.”

The official further said that by listening to stories children can improve their vocabulary, sentence structures, enrich their thinking and gradually work on their own speech.

“By the next academic year, around 1,000 primary government schools will have story corners and 50,000 teachers will be trained,” he said.

Stating that apart from the story corners, reading corners will also be established in 200 middle schools, he said, “For teachers, the reading corner will be a platform to support and facilitate children so that their reading can be meaningful. This space in a classroom can be a conducive, lively and interacting space for the kids.”

The proposed story corners will have a varied collection books which will include wordless picture books, illustrated books, story books, poetry collections, informal books, alphabets and number books.
