Vaithyalingam, Chockalingam, Perumal, Radhakrishnan of Meiyapuram and Rathinam of Ayyanarpuram filed a petition in the court seeking anticipatory bail. The petitioners claimed that Thirumayam police filed a case against the accused, who were named, and several others in the wake of the incident that occurred around 8.30 am on September 15. The petitioners claimed they were in no way connected to the incident.
Around 90 devotees had performed rituals near the Mariamman temple at Thirumayam. H Raja along with cadre of Hindu Munnani entered into a quarrel with Inspector of Police Ganesan over denial of making stage arrangements. The Inspector of Police had denied permission citing a court order. Subsequently, H Raja had allegedly passed derogatory remarks against the High Court and police personnel accusing them as corrupt.
