Vinayagar idols immersion: Banned materials found in Tiruvannamalai
Despite a month-long awareness campaign conducted against the making of Vinayagar idols with eco-unfriendly materials for Chathurthi celebrations, the district administration identified nearly 1500 idols immersed in 200 waterbodies that were made using banned materials including paint.

When Collector KS Kandasamy realised that the public message forwarded through the media failed to have any effect, he ordered that the idols made of banned materials should be seized.
“Before the festivities could start, we seized nearly 500 idols that were, on an average, 10-feet-high and locked them in godowns. The government is yet to decide on the action to be taken against such practices,” the Collector said.
Following this, the Collector led a waterbody cleaning drive along with 300 volunteers from various organisations and NGOs at the Tamaraikulam on Thandarampattu road in Tiruvannamalai.He further said that keeping in mind the religious sensitivities of the people, we took the help of school students to address public on the harmful effects of synthetic material.
